Come and Take a Walk With Us.
Blacksburg Walks invites
you to open up all your senses and go for a walk. Come and discover the many layers of history and culture in Blacksburg's landscape and reflect upon current questions of sustainability in our walks' special focus on food and the environment. And above all, get some fresh air.
What is this ?
Blacksburg Walks was created in the School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech in 2011. In a special study, students were introduced to cultural geography and interactive documentary art in an effort to further understand current social food and sustainability practices. Blacksburg Walks is made by students of Virginia Tech in collaboration with community members and reaches out to engage both populations in walking through Blacksburg and finding out about how food is produced and consumed here. It is also a great way to discover Blacksburg on foot and get to know the place.
Want to know more about this project? Read on. How does it work ?
An audio-walk is a self-guided walk you take with a sound composition leading you through places. Simply browse through the different walks on this website and see what they are all about. Then get your mp3 file under downloads. You can load the file to any mp3 player and take a walk with us. Please consider visiting our guestbook and contribute your stories, thoughts, ideas.
Hungry now ?
While making these walks we came across a lot of local produce and recipes. Check out our community cookbook and contribute your own favorite recipe.
